John Mahama Finally Reveals Palms For National Cathedral Project
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to continue the National Cathedral project, originally initiated by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, but stressed the importance of completing it at a much lower cost.
Speaking at a Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, Mahama assured the public that while the project would proceed, it would only do so after a comprehensive review and investigation into its finances. He emphasized that taxpayers would not shoulder the financial responsibility for completing the cathedral.
Mahama stated, “The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has recommended an audit and investigation into potential mismanagement of public funds linked to the National Cathedral. We will respect this directive and initiate a full investigation.”
He further noted that any misuse of funds would be addressed before resuming construction. “As Christians, it is our duty to find a way to complete this project without depending on public resources. Considering Ghana’s current economic situation, spending $200 million on the cathedral is unreasonable. We need to adopt a more practical budget and work together to raise the necessary funds,” he added.
Drawing comparisons, Mahama pointed to Nigeria, where a similar religious structure was built for only $30 million. He suggested Ghana could take a similar approach to minimize costs. Additionally, he mentioned the possibility of relocating the cathedral to a more suitable site if necessary.
Mahama reiterated that his administration would ensure all investigations into the project’s finances are completed before construction resumes. He stressed the importance of accountability, saying, “We must uncover the truth behind how public funds have been handled in this matter before we can proceed.”
He also reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and prudence, promising that under his leadership, the project would be managed more responsibly. “Ghanaians deserve clarity and fairness in all government projects, and this will be no exception,” Mahama said.
The completion of the National Cathedral, he explained, would only take place after implementing measures to ensure it is funded ethically and efficiently, in line with the country’s economic priorities. Watch the full video below
