John Dramani Mahama, the President, has mentioned the potential for moving the National Cathedral of Ghana. He brought this up during the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on January 12, 2025, recommending that the Christian community reevaluate both the project's location and its expenses.

President Mahama stressed the necessity of completing the cathedral without dependence on government finances and at a more reasonable price. He noted that this reevaluation might involve choosing an alternative location for the cathedral. Furthermore, he revealed intentions to look into how the previous government allocated funds for the cathedral, as per instructions from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). He raised concerns about the justification for advancing a project estimated at $400 million, particularly when Nigeria’s National Ecumenical Centre was constructed for $30 million.

Launched by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in March 2017, the National Cathedral initiative has been under examination regarding its funding and site. President Mahama's latest comments imply a shift toward a more financially prudent and cooperative approach to the undertaking.

The potential shift of the National Cathedral initiative highlights a larger discussion regarding national concerns and financial accountability. President Mahama advocates for a clear and inclusive method, making certain that significant projects resonate with the socio-economic requirements of the Ghanaian populace. By pushing for a reevaluation, he stresses the necessity of harmonizing cultural and spiritual goals with economic practicality.

This renewed emphasis aims to cultivate public agreement, ensuring that the National Cathedral stands for unity instead of discord. Given the worries related to its present site, expenses, and funding approaches, Mahama's suggestion motivates a nationwide conversation to develop a project that truly mirrors the shared aspirations of the people of Ghana.
