ECG Embarks on Disconnection Exercise: “Operation Keep the Lights On”
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced the launch of a nationwide disconnection drive dubbed “Operation Keep the Lights On”. The exercise, set to run from January 15 to January 31, 2025, will target customers in arrears while also ensuring compliance with regulations and inspecting prepaid meters for faults or tampering. The company has emphasized that recovering arrears is crucial to sustaining its operations and maintaining reliable power supply across the country.
During the two-week exercise, ECG will focus on identifying and addressing illegal self-reconnections, which are classified as criminal offenses under Legislative Instrument (LI) 2413. Customers are strongly advised to settle outstanding bills promptly, as defaulters risk immediate disconnection and possible legal action. The company also reiterated its legal mandate to access installations for inspections and enforcement, calling on the public to cooperate fully during the exercise.
To prioritize this initiative, ECG’s regional and district offices will operate with reduced staff, allowing senior management and field personnel to actively participate in the operation. Essential services, including emergency repairs and critical customer support, will continue to be available to ensure minimal disruption to non-targeted customers.
The disconnection drive is a critical step in ECG’s efforts to address challenges stemming from unpaid bills and illegal activities that undermine its operations. By enhancing revenue mobilization, the company aims to reduce financial losses and invest in infrastructure and improved service delivery. ECG has appealed to the public to support this initiative by adhering to regulations and reporting illegal connections to aid its efforts in promoting accountability and energy sustainability.
With “Operation Keep the Lights On,” ECG is making a decisive move to ensure long-term stability in Ghana’s power supply. Customers are encouraged to stay informed, settle arrears, and cooperate with the company to ensure the success of this vital exercise. For further inquiries or assistance, ECG’s regional and district offices remain open to provide guidance and support.
