Reece James announced his return to Premier League action in style, scoring a stunning 95th-minute free-kick to secure a 1-1 draw for Chelsea against Bournemouth. The captain’s pinpoint strike capped a triumphant comeback after a season plagued by hamstring injuries that sidelined him for 21 matches.

A Long Road Back

James, 25, described his recovery journey as “lonely and frustrating” in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live. His return marked only his sixth Premier League appearance of the season and his first goal since October 2022 against AC Milan.

"It was an incredible feeling," James said, reflecting on the elation of helping his team.

The Match-Winning Moment

Substituted on in the 56th minute, James quickly found his rhythm. When Chelsea earned a free kick in the dying moments, Cole Palmer stepped aside for the skipper, who delivered a brilliant strike from 20 yards out.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca praised James’ technique, saying, “Reece has the quality to match Cole on free-kicks. He showed that trust and rewarded the team.”

Fitness First

James’ career has been hampered by recurring knee and hamstring injuries, raising concerns about his long-term fitness. Despite his talent, he has started only eight league games since being named captain at the beginning of the 2023-24 season.

"Now, the target for him is to stay fit for the remainder of the campaign," Maresca emphasized.

National Team Aspirations

James’ return also reignites hopes of reclaiming his place in the England squad. His last appearance for the national team was in March 2023, but he remains optimistic about a call-up.

"I know what I can bring to the team, and Tuchel knows my capabilities," James told TNT Sports, referencing his time under Thomas Tuchel, who watched the match from the stands.

What’s Next for Chelsea?

Chelsea remains in the midst of a challenging season, but James’ return offers a much-needed boost. With his leadership and quality back on the pitch, the Blues will hope to build on this late drama and push for a strong finish in the Premier League.

For James, the goal isn’t just about inspiring his team—it’s about proving he can stay fit and consistent, both for Chelsea and potentially for England.
