President John Dramani Mahama has named Mohammed Abdul Salaam, who serves as the Northern Regional Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the fresh Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA). This decision comes in the wake of Sammi Awuku’s resignation, who left to dedicate more time to his role as the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North.

Sammi Awuku, previously the National Organizer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was selected as the Director-General of NLA by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in August 2021. He stepped down from this role on January 13, 2025, subsequent to his election as an MP in the 2024 parliamentary elections. In his letter of resignation, Awuku stated that he wanted to focus on fulfilling his responsibilities to his constituents in Akuapem North.

The selection of Mohammed Abdul Salaam is anticipated to introduce a fresh leadership dynamic to the NLA, the government body tasked with overseeing lottery operations in Ghana. As the NDC’s Northern Regional Secretary, Abdul Salaam has played a significant role in the party’s regional management and political planning. His new position at the NLA will require him to supervise the authority's functions and uphold the integrity of lottery activities across the country.

The selection of Mohammed Abdul Salaam as the new Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) marks a noteworthy change in the agency's management. With extensive experience as an administrator and a political leader, Abdul Salaam is expected to bring significant insights to the position, especially from his previous role as the Northern Regional Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His selection demonstrates the government’s aim to inject new vitality into the NLA, guaranteeing its status as a vigorous and transparent body in overseeing lottery operations nationwide.

This change follows the resignation of Sammi Awuku, whose time at the NLA included initiatives aimed at improving lottery processes and advocating for fairness within the industry. Awuku's choice to resign highlights his dedication to his role as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, illustrating the necessity of balancing various public service responsibilities to effectively cater to the needs of constituents and stakeholders.

Under Abdul Salaam's leadership, the NLA is set to advance its objective of refining lottery functions while sustaining its role in national progress. His guidance is expected to tackle significant issues, including the fight against unauthorized lottery activities and enhancing clarity in revenue collection. Furthermore, his political experience and grasp of regional issues may allow him to cultivate partnerships with diverse stakeholders, ensuring that the NLA fulfills its objectives successfully.
