Ablekuma: Supporters Who Destroyed Our Properties Were Led By NDC Regional Organizer-EC Claims
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has attributed its inability to finalize the collation of results for the Ablekuma North Constituency to insufficient security measures provided by the police at the collation center.
The Accra High Court had issued a directive mandating the EC to complete the collation process for the constituency’s parliamentary election results. The court also ordered the Inspector General of Police to ensure adequate and armed security throughout the exercise. Despite these instructions, the process was marred by chaos when a group of individuals disrupted the collation efforts.
During the seventh attempt to recount and collate results at the EC office in Greater Accra, a mob, reportedly comprising supporters of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stormed the premises. They vandalized the office, breaking louvre blades, and accused the EC of attempting to manipulate the process in favor of the NPP candidate. The group insisted that the Commission’s work had already concluded and should not proceed with further collation activities.
The disruption compelled the EC to indefinitely suspend the collation of results for the Ablekuma North Constituency.
In a statement addressing the incident, the EC identified the leader of the group as the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the NDC. Additionally, the statement disclosed that two individuals dressed in unmarked military uniforms were spotted among the NDC supporters involved in the disruption.
The EC emphasized that it possesses video evidence of the incident and has called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate and apprehend those responsible. The Commission also appealed to the government to provide sufficient security for its operations, ensuring that it can carry out its constitutional mandate without interference.
This unfortunate event has heightened tensions in the Ablekuma North Constituency, leaving residents frustrated over delays in finalizing election results. The EC’s appeal underscores the critical need for robust security measures to safeguard the electoral process and uphold public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions. By addressing these challenges, the government and law enforcement agencies can help restore order and confidence in the system.
