Mankessim Chieftaincy Dispute Leads to Murder Charges: Trial Set to Begin

In a significant development stemming from a 2019 chieftaincy dispute in Mankessim, Ghana, the former Queen Mother, Nana Amba Amissah III, along with four others, is set to face trial for charges including conspiracy to commit murder and causing unlawful harm. The trial is scheduled to commence on February 20, 2024, at the Cape Coast High Court Two, with proceedings expected to conclude by the end of July.

The charges originate from a violent incident in December 2019 during the installation of a new Queen Mother, Nana Araba Otuah II. The installation followed a Cape Coast High Court ruling that nullified the enstoolment of Nana Amba Amissah III and the Paramount Chief, Osagyefo Amanfo Adu IV, ordering their names to be removed from the National House of Chiefs' register.

During the ceremonial procession along Mankessim's Anafo road, gunmen reportedly opened fire from a nearby storey building, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) officer for the Mfantsiman Constituency. Eight others sustained injuries, among them a police officer.

The Central Regional Police arrested the former Queen Mother and the Paramount Chief, suspecting their involvement in orchestrating the attack to disrupt the enstoolment process. Both were remanded into police custody by the Saltpond District Court and are now set to face trial alongside the other accused individuals.

The upcoming trial has garnered significant public interest, with the court emphasizing the need for accurate and responsible reporting. Journalists have been cautioned against disseminating false or misleading information regarding the case.

This case underscores the complexities and potential for violence inherent in chieftaincy disputes within Ghana. As the trial proceeds, it is hoped that justice will be served, providing closure to the victims' families and contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the Mankessim community.
