Western Region Chiefs Express Discontent Over Government Neglect

Traditional leaders in Ghana's Western Region have voiced their dissatisfaction with the government's neglect of the area. They highlighted issues such as abandoned infrastructure projects, declining cocoa production, and environmental degradation due to illegal mining.

Abandoned Infrastructure Projects

The chiefs criticized the government's handling of infrastructure projects, describing them as disastrous. They pointed out that many road projects have been left incomplete, leading to deteriorating conditions for the people of the region. One chief remarked, "Our roads are in bad shape, and many projects have been left incomplete. We’re really suffering here in the Western region, despite our contributions to the national economy through resources like oil and gold."

Declining Cocoa Production

Cocoa production, a vital economic activity in the region, has seen a significant decline. By the end of June 2024, Ghana's cocoa output was only 429,323 metric tons, less than 55% of the average seasonal output. This shortfall, combined with adverse weather and diseases, has contributed to a global rise in cocoa prices.

Environmental Degradation from Illegal Mining

Illegal mining, known locally as "galamsey," has led to severe environmental damage, health risks, and crime. The chiefs expressed concern over the destruction of water bodies and forests, which has adversely affected the livelihoods of the people. One chief stated, "Our water bodies have been destroyed, and our people continue to suffer from a lack of basic resources."

Calls for Government Intervention

The chiefs have called for swift government intervention to address these critical issues. They emphasized the need for infrastructure development, support for the cocoa industry, and measures to combat illegal mining. The queen mothers of the region also voiced their frustrations, appealing directly to political leaders to remember the region's plight. One queen mother urged, "When you come into power, remember us."

Conclusion

The chiefs' grievances highlight the urgent need for government attention to the Western Region's challenges. Addressing these issues is crucial for the region's development and the well-being of its people.
