Sandra Esinam, Former Staff At Media General Sends Message To Captain Smart

Sandra Esinam, a former employee of Media General, has shared a candid message directed at Captain Smart, host of the Onua Maakye show on Onua TV, and the media house itself. In her remarks, she expressed deep disappointment over the current state of the network, which she once held in high regard for its commitment to quality journalism.

Taking to her Facebook page, Sandra voiced concerns about what she perceives as a significant decline in the standard of content aired by Media General. She accused the network of abandoning its reputable foundations, alleging that its broadcasts now often feature material she considers lacking in intellectual depth. Sandra was particularly critical of certain presenters, whom she accused of spreading hate speech and promoting baseless ideas, a practice she warned could have harmful consequences.

She pointed out that Media General’s drift from its journalistic roots is especially troubling given the intense competition within the media industry today, fueled by the rise of bloggers and social media influencers. Despite this competitive environment, she urged the network to place national interests above sensationalism and prioritize responsible journalism over the pursuit of attention-grabbing content. As an example of the network’s shortcomings, Sandra highlighted a video of Captain Smart discussing the Ashanti Gold incident, suggesting it exemplified the issues she had raised.

In addition to her criticism of the network's content, Sandra also called out its leadership, asserting that the Group CEO appears to focus more on securing awards and recognition than ensuring the organization upholds journalistic integrity. “It’s heartbreaking to see such a respected institution prioritize accolades over ethical and responsible broadcasting,” she wrote.

Sandra went on to reflect on what she views as a larger societal issue in Ghana, where mediocrity is often celebrated at the expense of merit. She stressed the importance of Media General returning to its original mission of delivering responsible and informative journalism. In her view, the current direction of the network undermines both the media industry and the nation as a whole.

Her message serves as a call to action for Media General to reassess its priorities and strive to rebuild the trust and respect it once commanded in the media landscape.
