First Year Students To Receive Refunds For Fee Paid Under Free Level 100 Policy-Haruna Iddrisu
Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister-designate for Education, has assured Ghanaians that first-year students who paid fees under John Mahama’s Free Level 100 Policy will receive refunds. Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, 2025, he clarified that the policy specifically covers admission fees, as tuition fees for public tertiary institutions are already free.
He explained that the Free Level 100 Policy, a key initiative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s education reforms, was designed to ease the financial burden on new students entering public tertiary institutions. Haruna reiterated that the policy excludes tuition fees since Ghana’s educational framework already provides free tuition at this level.
During the vetting, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, a member of the committee, raised concerns about the growing demand for employment within the education sector. He noted that his office had received multiple calls earlier in the day from individuals seeking recruitment into the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Haruna acknowledged these challenges and assured the committee that efforts to address them were underway. He explained that hiring within the GES would depend on financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance. “Recruitment will be carried out once we receive the necessary clearance from the Finance Ministry,” he stated confidently.
On the topic of teacher licensure exams, Haruna proposed integrating these exams into the routine assessments conducted in teacher training colleges. He argued that this would reduce the stress on teacher trainees and streamline the process of obtaining certification.
His responses during the vetting showcased his understanding of the pressing issues in Ghana’s education sector and his commitment to resolving them. If confirmed as Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu is expected to bring a renewed focus to the sector, particularly in fulfilling the NDC’s promises under John Mahama’s leadership.
This policy initiative and Haruna’s proposed measures reflect the NDC’s vision of improving access to and quality of education in Ghana. With these reforms, the government aims to alleviate financial constraints on students, improve teacher training processes, and ensure efficient recruitment in the education sector. These commitments, if implemented effectively, could mark a significant step toward addressing long-standing challenges in Ghana’s education system. Watch the full video below
