Nana Oye Bampoe Addo is a highly respected human rights lawyer with over three decades of experience. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Ghana and a Master's in Law (LLM) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa from the University of Pretoria. Her career has been marked by a tireless commitment to advancing human rights and social justice at the international, regional, and national levels.
As the Africa Regional Coordinator for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, Nana Oye championed human rights causes across the continent. She also founded the Human Rights Advocacy Centre, a leading NGO dedicated to research and advocacy on human rights issues. Throughout her career, she has been instrumental in advocating for and securing the passage of critical legislation, including the Children's Act, the Criminal Code Amendment Act, and the Domestic Violence Act.
A Proven Track Record in Government
Nana Oye's experience in government is equally impressive. As the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection under the previous NDC administration, she spearheaded the development of key policies, including the Gender Policy, Social Protection Policy, and the Child and Family Welfare Policy. She also oversaw the restructuring of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP) and successfully championed the closure of a traditional witch camp in the Northern Region of Ghana.
Beyond her ministerial role, Nana Oye has held several key positions within the NDC, including Secretary of the Conflict Resolution Committee, Secretary of the Manifesto Committee, and Chair of the Gender, Children and Social Protection Committee. She has also served as a member of the World Bank Advisory Council for Partnership for Economic Inclusion.
