The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially announced the date for the elections of Regional Representatives to the Council of State, scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, 2025. These elections, which are a constitutional requirement under Paragraph (C), Clause (2) of Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, will take place across all regional capitals. The EC is yet to disclose the specific venues but has assured that all arrangements are being finalized to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process. This exercise is crucial for appointing representatives who will provide advice and support to the presidency on national matters.
In a press statement released on January 22, 2025, the EC called on eligible individuals interested in contesting to submit their nomination forms between Tuesday, January 28, and Friday, January 31, 2025. The forms, which can be downloaded from the Commission’s website, must be completed in triplicate and submitted to the respective Regional Directors at designated venues. Each candidate’s nomination must be proposed and seconded by two registered voters from their region, supported by 20 additional voters. Candidates are also required to provide two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background clearly showing their full face and ears. Importantly, the statement emphasized that candidates must consent to their nomination before their forms are considered valid.
The EC reiterated its commitment to a credible electoral process and encouraged prospective candidates to adhere strictly to the outlined guidelines. By meeting the submission requirements within the stipulated timeframe, candidates stand a chance to vie for positions that will enable them to influence governance positively through their roles on the Council of State. The upcoming elections highlight the importance of regional representation in Ghana’s democratic structure, as these representatives serve as key advisors to the government. With the announcement of the election date, the EC has assured Ghanaians of its readiness to oversee a transparent and successful electoral process that reflects the will of the people.
