Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare Pledges to Revive Komenda Sugar Factory

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister-designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, has promised to revive the Komenda Sugar Factory to enhance local sugar production and reduce Ghana’s reliance on imports. Speaking during her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, the Techiman North MP highlighted that the factory has been non-operational due to significant challenges, including the unavailability of raw materials and missing parts. She pointed out that while funds were allocated in the past to address these issues, a thorough evaluation of the facility's overall condition is now essential. This assessment will determine the best approach to restore the factory’s operations and ensure it serves its intended purpose.

Madam Ofosu-Adjare also emphasized the economic importance of revamping the Komenda Sugar Factory, revealing that Ghana currently spends about $500 million annually on sugar imports. According to her, reducing this dependency on imported sugar is a strategic move that will benefit the economy while promoting local industry. She reassured the committee of her readiness to work with the ministry to conduct a detailed review of the factory's condition once she assumes office. The review will guide efforts to address the challenges and ensure the facility operates efficiently, producing sugar locally and creating job opportunities for Ghanaians. She further reiterated that reviving the factory is part of a broader vision to strengthen Ghana’s industrialization agenda.

Commissioned in 2016, the Komenda Sugar Factory was initially envisioned as a cornerstone of Ghana’s drive towards industrialization but has faced several operational setbacks due to poor management and resource constraints. Madam Ofosu-Adjare expressed her determination to transform the factory into a functional and profitable enterprise that aligns with the country’s development goals. By reviving the factory, she aims to increase local production, reduce import costs, and support the agricultural sector through the cultivation of sugarcane. She remains optimistic that with the right strategies and support, the Komenda Sugar Factory will become a symbol of Ghana’s commitment to economic self-reliance and industrial growth.
