During a bilateral meeting with WEF President, Mr Børge Brende, at the ongoing WEF annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Shettima outlined how the pipeline would transport natural gas from Nigeria to North Africa and Europe, enhancing energy security and economic growth across the region.
He also emphasized the importance of recharging Lake Chad to address the global food security crisis and tackle existential threats. Shettima highlighted Nigeria's potential to use the WEF platform to further develop its gas resources and capitalize on opportunities for economic growth.
The Vice President noted that Nigeria is in a prime position to meet the growing global demand for energy, driven by factors like artificial intelligence, data mining, and storage, as well as the geopolitical challenges in Europe, particularly related to Russian gas.
He discussed the exploration of undersea pipeline routes, aiming for a collaborative approach that benefits all stakeholders, including littoral states in West Africa that have discovered gas.
Shettima also stressed Nigeria’s status as a "gas nation," more so than an oil nation, and the urgency of using its natural resources to generate wealth and address the needs of its growing population.
Regarding Lake Chad, he explained that its recharging would not only solve food security challenges but could also provide clean energy and help combat terrorism. He mentioned the possibility of a 2,400-kilometer canal to transform the agricultural landscape of the Sahel region.
Additionally, Shettima outlined the ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu, including subsidy removal, exchange rate alignment, and tax reforms. He assured that Nigeria is on a path to sustained economic growth.
Finally, the Vice President invited Mr. Brende to visit Nigeria and explore the possibility of hosting the WEF Africa event, emphasizing that Nigeria remains the continent’s largest economy and most populous nation, with a population of 250 million.
