Tensions erupted in the Effutu constituency as some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressed their frustration over the party’s failure to secure a government appointment for their parliamentary candidate, Dr. James Kofi Annan. The supporters stormed the constituency office, chanting protest songs and vandalizing party property in a desperate bid to highlight their displeasure.
The discontent stems from the party’s inability to secure an appointment for Dr. Annan, who is the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 elections. Despite President John Dramani Mahama's recent appointments to various positions in state institutions, Effutu supporters are upset that their candidate has been left out. They argue that Dr. Annan’s dedication and hard work during the elections deserve recognition in the form of an official appointment.
One supporter angrily warned, “If you don’t appoint him, don’t step foot here again!” This statement reflects the growing frustration among NDC supporters in the constituency, who feel neglected by the party leadership.
Awo Sagoe, a resident, shared her displeasure, stating, “We laid down our lives for the party to come into power, but now that the NDC is in power, they must reward James Kofi Annan with an appointment. The NPP is laughing at us because we don’t have a single appointment. This isn’t fair.”
Ebenezer Frimpong Manso, another supporter, emphasized Dr. Annan’s impact on the constituency, saying, “When James Kofi Annan became the candidate, the NPP intensified development projects in the area. It shows that he is valued and deserves an appointment. The party leadership has neglected him, and the NPP is laughing at us for it.”
The supporters are calling on key NDC leaders, including Minority Leader Dr. Ato Forson and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to intervene and ensure Dr. Annan is given the recognition he deserves. They argue that an appointment for their candidate is crucial for the unity and morale of the Effutu constituency.
As the list of ministerial and CEO appointments nears completion, the growing discontent in Effutu poses a challenge for the NDC leadership. How the party addresses these grievances could have significant implications for its unity and success moving forward.
