Chaired by Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, former CEO of Bui Power Authority, the committee is expected to develop a financially sustainable model that will enhance the efficiency of the power distribution sector, including the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
This marks one of the first significant actions taken by the newly appointed minister to address challenges within Ghana’s power sector. The initiative follows a recent report by financial advisory firm PwC, which revealed that ECG had incurred a net loss of 5.96 billion cedis and a debt of 47.2 billion cedis.
"We have a duty as a government to serve the ordinary Ghanaian," Minister Jinapor stated. "Our goal is to bring efficiency, accountability, and transparency, and to ensure that we turn things around," he added.
He urged all stakeholders to fully cooperate with the committee in order to develop a roadmap that is both practical and widely acceptable, ultimately aiming to improve sector efficiency.
Minister Jinapor also emphasized the importance of ensuring fair local participation in the final framework. "We have always advocated for local content, so keep this in mind as you work to integrate local participation into ECG’s operations," he urged.
The minister also raised concerns about debts accumulated through what he described as ECG’s problematic procurement processes.
In response, committee chair Jabesh Amissah-Arthur assured the minister of the committee’s commitment to delivering a sustainable solution that will bring value to ECG.
The committee has been given one month to propose a financially viable privatization model to ensure the efficient operation of power distribution agencies.
The committee members include Benjamin Boakye, Dr. Simon Akorli, Ebenezer Baiden, Emma Akua Bulley (Esq.), Edward Abrokwah, Dr. Shafic Suleman (Secretary), and Jabesh Amissah-Arthur (Chairman).
