After being briefed on the incident by AngloGold Ashanti officials at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene expressed his deep concern and disappointment, emphasizing that a change in government should not be seen as a license for people to engage in unlawful behaviour.

“No one, not even the government should ever support illegal mining. The transition of power should not allow anyone to act irresponsibly,” Otumfuo stated.

He added, “We live in a society governed by law, and I don’t believe this government will tolerate such actions.”

The Asantehene’s remarks followed the deadly confrontation between the military and illegal miners at the AngloGold Ashanti concession, which resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and several others sustaining injuries.

He called on the government to swiftly address the persistent issue of illegal mining. He urged security forces to be proactive in upholding law and order and ensuring that those responsible for lawlessness are held accountable.

Muntaka expressed his readiness to collaborate with Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, in addressing the root causes of the conflict, which has hindered the region’s development.

“We need to work together to resolve these issues. With dedication and cooperation, I am confident that we can bring lasting peace to Bawku,” he stated.

Speaking during his vetting on Friday, the Asawase MP also emphasized his commitment to working alongside the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs.

“I am eager to support the president in fulfilling his promise to the people of Bawku by doing everything possible to ensure peace is restored—not only in Bawku but in all other regions facing similar challenges,” he said. Continue.....
