The heated debate over Ghana’s controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ Act, has once again taken center stage in political discourse. Bagbin promises to finalize anti-LGBTQ law in parliament this year of 2025.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Alban Bagbin recently reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to ensuring that the bill becomes law by 2025, addressing the contentious issue with a level of determination that left no room for ambiguity.

Speaking during a gathering of traditional leaders and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bagbin reflected on the difficult journey of the bill.

“The LGBTQ bill was passed in Parliament but the former president refused to accept it, which was unconstitutional,” Bagbin noted, referring to the actions of the previous administration.

He highlighted the legislative power held by Parliament, saying: “Parliament is the law-making authority, not the president.

That decision was wrong and you all punished him for it.”

The president’s words paint a vivid picture of the conflict between the executive and the legislature.

The previous president’s refusal to assent to the bill sparked outrage among the bill’s sponsors, who saw the decision as a betrayal of Ghana’s cultural and moral values.

For Bagbin, the issue is not just political; it is deeply personal and spiritual.

“I will write to the new Attorney General and the Minister of Justice for their comments so that we can resubmit it to the new president for assent,” Bagbin said, signaling his intention to expedite the process.

“This will not last. It will be passed this year. It is ungodly, and no one should joke with me about this. I could lose my life for this reason.”
