Veteran actress Joke Silva has spoken out about the recent spate of murders of women by their partners over alleged infidelity, expressing her outrage and concern.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Beats, Silva condemned the killings, arguing that men who murder their partners over accusations of cheating should face life imprisonment.
“These men should be tried and sentenced to life in prison because it’s a capital offence. The law must take its course because this is absurd. Men cheat all the time. Do they get killed? Do they get burned alive? This is nonsense. Where’s the proof that she cheated? And what happens to the man she allegedly cheated with? Is he just allowed to go free?” Silva questioned.
She continued, “It’s heartbreaking. Even if there’s proof of cheating, why can’t you just leave the relationship? Take your things and go, or send her back to her family. If you look closely, you’ll probably find that the murderer has been unfaithful countless times, but still chooses to kill his partner over one instance.”
Silva also reminded us that the women who have been murdered are someone's daughters, mothers, and loved ones.
When asked about the entertainment industry’s role in addressing these crimes, she responded, “What more advocacy can the industry do? One of the most powerful forms of advocacy is enforcing consequences for bad behaviour. This isn’t just bad behaviour; it’s criminal.”
