The Ghana Football Association has appointed Winfried Schäfer as the new technical director for the Black Stars, bringing a wealth of experience to the national team.

AFCON Winner with Cameroon
Schäfer led the Indomitable Lions to their fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2002, securing victory over Senegal in a penalty shootout in the final. His tactical brilliance was instrumental in establishing Cameroon as one of Africa’s most dominant teams.
2003 FIFA Confederations Cup Runners-Up
Schäfer also guided Cameroon to the final of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they narrowly lost to France after a 97th-minute golden goal from Thierry Henry. This made Cameroon the first African team to reach the final of the prestigious tournament.
Success Across Three Continents
Throughout his career, Schäfer has won eight major trophies, including the Caribbean Cup with Jamaica in 2015 and the UAE Super Cup with Al Ain in 2009. He also claimed a league title with Al Ahli during the 2005-2006 season. Additionally, he secured three domestic cups with Al-Ain: the UAE President's Cup (2008-09), the Etisalat Emirates Cup (2008-09), and the UAE Super Cup (2009). In total, Schäfer has earned three national honours and five club honours.

Schäfer's coaching career began in 1986 with Karlsruher SC, following his playing career at the club. Over 948 matches as a manager, he has maintained a solid 42.19% win rate, proving his consistency. His coaching journey has taken him across multiple continents, earning a reputation for transforming teams into competitive forces.
Bundesliga Career
The now 75-year-old Schäfer was a talented midfielder who played for Bundesliga clubs Borussia Mönchengladbach and Kickers Offenbach. He made 403 appearances and scored 46 goals, winning the Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, underscoring his solid football pedigree.
