I Will Slap Any Minister Watching TV Or On The Phone At The Ministry-Benjamin Takyi Addo
Benjamin Takyi Addo has emphasized the struggles Ghanaians endured to re-elect President John Mahama and stressed the need for appointees to be held accountable. He believes that Mahama’s return to power was divinely orchestrated, and his success or failure will determine Ghana’s future.
Speaking on (Onua FM), Takyi Addo asserted that President Mahama has been given a crucial opportunity to reset the country. He cited comments made by Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, who also acknowledged Mahama’s potential to transform Ghana. According to him, the overwhelming support Mahama received in the elections is proof that Ghanaians placed their trust in him. However, he cautioned that if the president and his administration fail to deliver, the entire nation will suffer the consequences.
"The votes he secured were historic, which means Ghanaians deliberately chose Mahama. If he fails to deliver, it will be disastrous. This is why we must monitor the conduct of appointees and ensure they act responsibly," he stated.
Takyi Addo went on to highlight the importance of ministers maintaining professionalism when assuming office. He advised them to work collaboratively with existing staff rather than fostering hostility. He suggested that individuals who might disrupt government operations should be reassigned to other roles.
“I have always maintained that ministers should cooperate with those already working in the ministries. If you identify people who might create challenges, find appropriate roles for them instead of allowing them to hinder progress. Ghana cannot afford to have disruptive individuals in key positions,” he added.
Expressing his frustration with inefficiency in government offices, Takyi Addo criticized the lack of responsiveness among public servants. He recounted a scenario where officials failed to answer questions when approached. He warned that such attitudes would not be tolerated in Mahama’s administration.
“The television sets in ministries should not just be for decoration. If I visit an office and staff members ignore my inquiries, I will not tolerate it. Public servants must understand that they are accountable to the people. When Mahama appoints his government, we will be monitoring their actions because this country belongs to all of us. Ghanaians went through hardship before Mahama was re-elected,” he declared.
He further emphasized the role of citizens in keeping government officials in check. He pointed out that during the election period, many people sacrificed their time and sleep to ensure Mahama’s victory. Now that he is in power, it is the collective responsibility of Ghanaians to oversee his administration and demand accountability from his appointees.
“There was a time when no one could sleep, and the entire nation was focused on Media General for updates. Now that Mahama is in office, he cannot monitor everything alone. That is why we must scrutinize his appointees. When I visit a government office, I expect to be acknowledged. Instead, you find people watching television or talking on the phone instead of doing their jobs,” he lamented.
Benjamin Takyi Addo’s remarks reflect a broader concern among Ghanaians regarding government accountability. As Mahama’s administration takes shape, the public remains watchful, ensuring that appointees remain committed to the development and progress of the country.
