The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has announced a monitoring exercise aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of internal assessment practices in Senior High Schools (SHS), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS), and STEM institutions. This initiative is part of the rollout of the new SHS/SHTS/STEM curriculum for the 2024/2025 academic year.
Purpose of the Monitoring Exercise
The internal assessment monitoring exercise is designed to evaluate how schools are implementing new assessment practices introduced by WAEC and GES. These assessments play a crucial role in shaping students’ academic performance and preparing them for final examinations.
GES and WAEC officials will visit selected schools across the country from February 10th to 14th, 2025, to observe and assess the process in Year 1 classes. The primary goal is to ensure adherence to the new curriculum’s internal evaluation requirements, fostering consistency and fairness in student assessments.
Key Objectives
- Assess the implementation of new internal assessment strategies.
- Identify challenges schools may be facing in executing assessments.
- Provide guidance to teachers and administrators for effective evaluation techniques.
- Strengthen the credibility of internal assessments for national examinations.
Expected Impact on Education
This initiative is expected to enhance the quality of student assessment, ensuring that schools adhere to standardized evaluation practices. By working closely with WAEC, GES aims to improve the transition from internal assessments to external exams, boosting students’ preparedness and academic performance.
Call for Cooperation
GES is urging all school heads, teachers, and students to actively participate in the monitoring exercise. Regional Directors of Education are expected to facilitate smooth coordination to ensure the initiative’s success.
The monitoring visit highlights GES and WAEC’s commitment to enhancing education quality in Ghana. With structured internal assessments, students will benefit from a more robust learning experience that aligns with national and global standards.
