NPP's "Mighty Minority" Vows to Stand Firm Against Speaker's Actions
The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, has declared that the NPP minority in Parliament will not be intimidated or bulldozed by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin. This statement comes after the Speaker suspended four Members of Parliament (MPs) for two weeks following a chaotic incident during the Appointments Committee sitting.
Nana B expressed his support for the minority caucus, commending them on their excellent work in conducting parliamentary business. He assured them that the party will continue to stand behind them, urging them to remain resilient and unafraid of the NDC majority and the Speaker's actions.
The minority caucus, in response, promised to insist on following due procedure and consensus building in the House, despite the challenges they may face. Nana B emphasized that the NPP minority will not be pushovers, and they will continue to hold the government accountable.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, also condemned the Speaker's actions, describing them as "selective" and "autocratic". He stated that the party sees this as a dangerous attempt to weaken the minority's ability to hold the government accountable.
The NPP has reiterated its unwavering support for its MPs, calling on all Members of Parliament to stand united against "repression and unfairness". The party has emphasized its commitment to addressing all forms of repression and unfairness in the application of parliamentary rules.
This development comes amidst a tumultuous period in Ghana's Parliament, with the Speaker's decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant being overturned by the Supreme Court. The court's ruling has significant implications for the balance of power in Parliament, and the NPP's "Mighty Minority" is determined to make its voice heard.
