In a bid to promote a competitive and responsible approach to environmental sanitation, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has announced the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day and a Cleanest City Award. This initiative is in line with the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) "Clean Up Ghana" agenda, which aims to improve environmental cleanliness and waste management across the region.

As part of this initiative, a Regional Sanitation Day will be observed on the last Friday of every month. This move is expected to promote a culture of cleanliness and proper waste management among residents of the Greater Accra Region. The minister emphasized that waste management and sanitation would be a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), encouraging a more competitive and responsible approach to environmental sanitation.

Key Components of the Sanitation Initiative

- Comprehensive Sanitation Policy: The minister's administration will implement a comprehensive sanitation policy that encourages waste segregation and the provision of garbage bags and bins in public places and homes.

- Capacity Building: The capacities of sanitation and waste management departments within the MMDAs will be strengthened to enhance efficiency.

- Social and Behavioural Change Campaigns: Social and behavioural change campaigns will be intensified to educate and reorient citizens on proper sanitation practices.

- Local Governance: The minister plans to strengthen local governance by working closely with traditional authorities, religious organisations, and other stakeholders to deepen decentralisation.

Additional Initiatives

In addition to the sanitation initiative, Hon. Ocloo announced plans to:

- Enhance Security: Collaborate with security agencies to maintain peace and order in accordance with the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2020 (Act 1030).

- Improve Economic Development: Collaborate with MMDCEs to drive local economic development, with a particular focus on supporting women entrepreneurs.

- Facilitate Trade Fairs: Facilitate trade fairs in collaboration with relevant institutions to promote local businesses.

Hon. Ocloo expressed confidence that through collective effort, the Greater Accra Region would become a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous region for all.
