Popular actor Lateef Adedimeji has earned a reputation for his versatility, effortlessly shifting between intense emotional roles, comedic performances, and action-packed characters. But his rise to fame didn’t happen by chance.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, the actor revealed that his early strategy was to stand out by becoming known for his emotional crying scenes.
He explained, “When I started, I decided to carve a niche by crying in movies. I would cry like an idiot. If asked to cry for a minute, I’d go for two. I was intentional. At one point, when people couldn’t recall my name, they would call me ‘the guy who cries in movies.’ But when that became overwhelming, I switched gears and introduced my Igbo-Yoruba character. I was strategic every step of the way.”
Adedimeji continued, “Then came ‘Ayinla,’ where people saw a different musical side to me, followed by ‘Jagun Jagun,’ which showcased my strength in action roles. At every stage, I made sure to reinvent myself strategically.”
When asked about ‘Lisabi’ making waves as one of the top Google Searches of 2024, he shared, “I’m excited. It brings so much joy to see something you’ve worked on being embraced by so many people. There’s no greater joy than that.”
Regarding the importance of filmmakers telling Indigenous stories, he emphasized, “If we can celebrate the heroes of other nations, why not our own? Our heroes fought for our freedom, so it’s only right we tell their stories and honour them.”
