Dr. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Governor of Anambra, has emphasized the importance of increasing awareness about early cancer detection, highlighting that the disease only becomes fatal when identified too late.

Speaking in Awka on Tuesday to mark the 2025 World Cancer Day, Mrs Soludo, Founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, stressed the critical role of early detection in combating cancer.

This year's World Cancer Day theme is "United by Unique."

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, aims to raise awareness about cancer, promote prevention and early detection, and encourage the pursuit of new treatments.

Mrs Soludo remarked, "Cancer is claiming lives at an alarming rate due to delayed detection and presentation. Each story of survival or loss underscores the need for heightened awareness and proactive efforts to reduce the cancer burden in our communities."

She further emphasized that early detection is at the heart of effective cancer care and education, stressing the significance of routine cancer screenings.

"There is a pressing need to explore people-centred cancer care and work toward sustainable global solutions to this widespread epidemic," she added.

Mrs Soludo also noted that lifestyle choices and diet play a significant role in reducing the risk of cancer.

She reiterated her commitment to promoting cancer awareness, especially at the grassroots level, through her initiative.

“At Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, we recognize the vital importance of spreading this message about cancer awareness within our communities. We urge everyone to prioritize routine screenings for early detection and treatment. Remember, cancer only becomes deadly when it is detected too late," she said.

"Our fight against cancer, especially cancers that affect women, is centred on changing the narrative that cancer is not a death sentence," Mrs Soludo concluded.

Meanwhile: The M23, an armed group supported by Rwanda, declared a humanitarian “ceasefire” beginning Tuesday in the volatile eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, just days ahead of a planned crisis meeting between Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
