Three federal employee unions have filed a lawsuit against the Treasury Department, alleging that Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) gained unauthorized access to sensitive information. The unions claim that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent violated federal law by sharing the department's data with DOGE, despite Musk's lack of a legitimate need for the information .

According to the lawsuit, Musk and DOGE staffers had been seeking access to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service's records for some time but were rebuffed by the employee in charge. However, Bessent allegedly put that employee on leave and granted DOGE's staffers full access to the Bureau's data and computers.

The unions argue that this alleged breach of confidentiality is "massive and unprecedented," and that federal laws protect sensitive personal and financial information from improper disclosure and misuse. They claim that Musk's access to the data is not only unauthorized but also potentially harmful to individuals whose information is stored in the Treasury Department's databases.

In response to the lawsuit, the White House has stated that Musk has "abided by all applicable federal laws" and that his role as a special government employee does not allow him to work for more than 130 days in a 365-day period.

The controversy surrounding Musk's access to Treasury data has sparked concerns about government transparency and accountability. The lawsuit filed by the federal employee unions seeks to ensure that sensitive information is protected from unauthorized access and that federal laws are enforced to prevent similar breaches in the future.
