Veteran Nigerian actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has advised singles to carefully investigate their potential partners before tying the knot.
In a viral video posted on Instagram, Agu warned against making marriage decisions based on peer pressure or desperation. He stressed that marriage should not be viewed as an all-or-nothing commitment and urged those in unhealthy relationships to either seek help or walk away for their own well-being.
"Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you're with an abusive partner or stuck in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you're unhappy in your marriage, seek help or leave for your own safety," he said.
The actor also highlighted the dangers of staying in harmful marriages for the sake of children or financial security.
"That’s how a woman was killed by her husband. Now, who will take care of the kids? Will it be the husband who killed you? Or your family who only cares for their own?" he added.
Chiwetalu Agu also stressed the importance of conducting thorough background checks before committing to marriage, advising against impulsive choices driven by physical attraction or societal expectations.
"Always remember to do a background check before marrying someone. She's beautiful, or he's handsome, but rushing into it could cost you your life. ‘My friends are all married, but I’m still single’—that kind of pressure could lead to disaster," he cautioned.
Agu concluded with a heartfelt prayer: "I pray we don't make mistakes that could cost us our lives in the name of marriage."
