This week, Apple launched iOS 18.3, introducing several significant new features powered by Apple Intelligence for all compatible iPhones. A standout addition is the new Visual Intelligence capabilities, which utilize Apple’s AI to provide insights about your surroundings.
For instance, if you own an iPhone 16, you can leverage its camera and the Camera Control button to identify various plants, animals, and insects. Additionally, you can use this functionality to scan event flyers and posters, which will automatically be added to your iPhone’s Calendar app.
(Note: Visual Intelligence features are exclusively available on iPhone 16 models, as the iPhone requires the new Camera Control button for this functionality.)
▎A New Default Setting
iOS 18.3 also modifies a setting on the iPhone. Previously, owners of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro/Max had to manually enable Apple Intelligence to access its features. With the introduction of iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence is now activated by default.
This means that if you own one of the latest iPhones (or last year’s Pro models) and update to the new software, it will consume 7GB of storage—this is the space required to support all of Apple Intelligence's various features. Furthermore, any device that has Apple Intelligence enabled, such as a compatible iPad (with A17 Pro or M1 chips and later) or Mac (M1 chip or later), will also use up 7GB of storage. Therefore, if you have one of these devices and do not utilize any Apple Intelligence features, it may be worthwhile to disable it.
While those with the newest iPhones might not be overly concerned about storage—at least for now—it can be somewhat frustrating, particularly if you don’t make use of Apple Intelligence features (which many users likely don’t).
▎How to Disable Apple Intelligence
Fortunately, you can easily turn off Apple Intelligence and reclaim the 7GB of storage it occupies. Here’s how:
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and select Apple Intelligence Siri.
3. Toggle off Apple Intelligence.
4. Confirm by selecting Turn Off Apple Intelligence when prompted.
