Global music sensation Shakira has opened up about her "difficult" split from former Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué, three years after their high-profile separation.
The Hips Don’t Lie singer, now 48, ended her 11-year relationship with Piqué, 38, in June 2022 amid rumours of infidelity. The former couple shares two sons, Milan, 12, and Sasha, 10, whom Shakira is now raising as a single mother.
Speaking in a candid interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Shakira admitted that music has been her biggest source of healing during this tough period.
"I've learned that my music has a therapeutic effect. I've been through a couple of difficult years, personally, you know, with the separation and all that, but music has been like the glue that has brought me back together," she shared.
Despite the challenges, Shakira remains focused on motherhood, acknowledging the weight of raising her children alone.
"I am in charge of these two children, these two babies who depend so much on me. I am a single mother, I don't have a husband or a housewife to help me with anything," she admitted.
Life After Piqué
Shakira and Piqué’s love story began in 2010 when they met on the set of her Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) music video. Their romance went public in 2011, leading to the birth of their two children. However, their relationship came to an end in 2022, with reports of Piqué moving on with Clara Chia Marti shortly after the breakup.
Meanwhile, Shakira has been linked to Emily in Paris actor Lucien Laviscount, with reports suggesting the two grew close while filming a steamy music video.
A New Era for Shakira
At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Shakira celebrated a major career milestone, winning Best Latin Pop Album for her latest project, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran ("Women Don’t Cry Anymore"). The emotional moment saw her embracing her two sons after receiving the award from Jennifer Lopez.
While Shakira admits that her chances in love seem "increasingly scarce," she remains committed to her music and her children, proving once again that she is an unstoppable force both on and off the stage.
