While Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14 in many countries, Brazil does things a bit differently, observing the occasion on a different day with its own unique cultural flair.
In Brazil, Valentine’s Day is called Dia dos Namorados, meaning "Lovers’ Day" or "Boyfriends’ and Girlfriends’ Day." While it shares traditions with the American and European versions—like exchanging gifts, flowers, and chocolates—it isn’t linked to Saint Valentine.
Instead, Dia dos Namorados falls on June 12, the day before Saint Anthony’s Day (June 13). Saint Anthony is highly regarded in Brazil as the patron saint of marriage, thought to bless couples with love and prosperity. Couples typically celebrate with romantic dinners, either at home or in restaurants, and exchange meaningful gifts.
What about singles, you ask? No worries! Many nightclubs, movie theatres, and bars host special events for those flying solo, so everyone can enjoy the day in their way.
The reason Brazil doesn’t celebrate the traditional Valentine’s Day in February is that it often overlaps with Carnival, one of the country’s most famous and vibrant festivals. This timing makes Brazil a popular escape for Western singles looking to skip the Valentine’s Day rush.
So whether you’re celebrating love with a partner or enjoying the festivities alone, Brazil’s approach to romance has something for everyone!
