Chelsea received a major blow in their race for a top-five finish in the Premier League in their recent match. The Blues need a top-five spot to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
However, they failed to secure three points—or even a single point—in their recent clash against Newcastle.
Newcastle opened the scoring in the 2nd minute through Sandro Tonali. Chelsea’s hopes for an equalizer were dented after striker Nicolas Jackson received a straight red card for an elbow on Botman following a VAR review.
The Senegalese forward was sent off in the 35th minute, leaving the Blues down to 10 men. Even before Jackson's dismissal, Chelsea were playing poorly, lacking cohesion and awareness on the pitch.
In fact, it was surprising to see Moisés Caicedo, a defensive midfielder, deployed as a right-back. Marcesa seemingly played several players out of position. The match ended 2-0, with Newcastle sealing the win by adding a second goal in the 90th minute.
Nicolas Jackson has now received more cards (4 in 2025) than premier League goal involvements(3) for Chelsea. According to reports, he is suspended for the club’s remaining two Premier League games of the season. Unless the red card is successfully appealed and overturned, Chelsea will be without a recognized striker, as Christopher Nkunku is still injured.
Jackson has faced growing criticism from Chelsea fans—not only for his goal drought and missed chances but now also for this red card, which could potentially ruin Chelsea’s chances of playing in the Champions League next season. It might just be the final straw.
Recall that Chelsea had pursued Victor Osimhen last summer in a bid to solve their striking problems. However, the move could not materialize due to a dispute over wages.
There is now no doubt that Chelsea will be looking to sign a new center forward this summer.
Meanwhile, they face Manchester United and Nottingham Forest in their final two Premier League games of the season. Victories in both matches are essential if they hope to clinch a UCL spot.
