A BLIND DATE SET BY FRIENDS

Emma and Liam had never met, but they had many mutual friends. Their best friends, Zoe and Daniel, had been trying to set them up for months. “They would be perfect for each other,” Zoe insisted.

“They both love books, travel, and coffee,” Daniel added. “We have to make this happen.”

But Emma and Liam weren’t convinced. Emma had just come out of a bad relationship and wasn’t ready to date again. Liam, on the other hand, was skeptical about blind dates. “What if it’s awkward?” he asked Daniel.

“Just trust us,” Daniel said with a grin.

So, Zoe and Daniel arranged for them to meet at Café Bloom, a quiet little coffee shop downtown. They didn’t tell Emma and Liam much about each other—just that it would be fun.

Emma arrived early, choosing a corner seat near the window. She sipped her cappuccino, tapping her fingers on the table. What if he was boring? What if they had nothing in common?

Liam, on the other hand, was running late. His car had a flat tire, and he had to rush to find a cab. When he finally arrived, ten minutes late, Emma was already thinking about leaving.

“You’re late,” she said, raising an eyebrow as he sat down.

“Yeah, sorry,” Liam replied, a little out of breath. “Car trouble.”

Emma sighed. “Not the best first impression.”

Liam frowned. “Well, I didn’t plan it.”

For a moment, they just stared at each other. This was exactly why Liam hated blind dates. And Emma? She was ready to call Zoe and tell her this was a terrible idea.

Just as Emma was about to make an excuse to leave, a waiter accidentally knocked over a tray, sending a plate of chocolate cake flying—right onto Liam’s lap.

There was a long silence. Then Emma burst out laughing.

Liam looked down at the mess, sighed, and started laughing too. “Well, at least now you’ll remember me,” he joked.

Emma smiled, her irritation fading. “Alright, I guess I can stay a little longer.”

They started talking, first about the café’s clumsy staff, then about books, travel, and their favorite childhood memories. To their surprise, the conversation flowed easily. Emma found herself laughing more than she had in months, and Liam realized he actually enjoyed blind dates—well, this one, at least.

As the evening went on, they lost track of time. The café was closing, but neither of them wanted to leave just yet.

“So,” Liam said, standing up and brushing cake crumbs off his jeans, “should we call this a disaster or a success?”

Emma grinned. “A little bit of both. But I wouldn’t mind seeing you again.”

Liam smiled. “Good. Next time, I’ll be on time.”

The next morning, Zoe and Daniel couldn’t wait to hear about the date. Emma texted Zoe, "It started as a disaster, but I actually had fun. You were right."

At the same time, Liam texted Daniel, "So… turns out you’re not a terrible matchmaker. But don’t get too proud."

Just as Zoe and Daniel were celebrating their matchmaking success, they both got another message—this time from Emma and Liam, at the exact same time:

"By the way… we already planned a second date. No need to set us up again."

Zoe and Daniel exchanged glances, then laughed. Their plan had worked better than expected. Sometimes, love just needed a little push—even if it came with a messy slice of chocolate cake.
