Reactions As Ablekuma North Candidates Put Up Billboards To Thank Voters Despite No Winner Declared

Two parliamentary hopefuls in Ablekuma North have caught the attention of many Ghanaians by erecting billboards to express their gratitude to their constituents, despite the Electoral Commission (EC) not yet announcing a winner in the parliamentary race.

This unexpected move has sparked varied reactions from the public. Some view it as perplexing, while others interpret it as a gesture of appreciation.

The candidates in question are Ewurabena Aubynn from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Following the parliamentary election on December 7, 2024, preliminary results showed Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie ahead with 34,613 votes, while Ewurabena Aubynn trailed with 34,199 votes—a narrow margin of just 414 votes.

However, the results have been contested due to irregularities in 21 polling stations. This has prompted the EC to delay the final result declaration and initiate a re-collation process. Unfortunately, this process has been hindered by disputes between the two political parties.

As a consequence, Ablekuma North remains without an official Member of Parliament, even though Ghana’s 9th Parliament is already in session. The situation has left constituents feeling unrepresented, leading to frustrations. Members of the NPP in Parliament have even voiced their displeasure, declaring, "No Ablekuma North MP, no government business," to show their dissatisfaction.

Both candidates, however, remain confident in their prospects. Ewurabena Aubynn has accused her rival of using unfair tactics during the vote counting, while Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie maintains that the preliminary results clearly indicate her victory.

This unusual situation has led many Ghanaians to question why both candidates are thanking their supporters when the election results have not been finalized. Some believe it reflects a sign of respect for their voters, while others feel it only adds to the confusion surrounding the election.

Below are some reactions from Ghanaians.
