Tensions reached a boiling point in Ashaiman as enraged residents took to the streets, storming and vandalizing the office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Chairman. Their frustration stemmed from what they perceived as President John Mahama’s neglect in appointing their Member of Parliament, Ernest Norgbey, to a ministerial position.
Earlier in the day, disgruntled constituents had mobilized for a large-scale protest, planning to block the Tema Motorway to draw attention to their grievances. However, quick intervention by the Constituency Chairman and other NDC executives prevented the demonstration from escalating at that moment.
Despite this intervention, many residents remained deeply dissatisfied with the outcome. Fueled by their disappointment, a group of demonstrators forcefully entered the party chairman’s office, causing significant damage. They broke down the gates and set tyres ablaze within the premises, using fire and destruction as a means of venting their anger.
The protesters argue that Ashaiman has long been a stronghold for the NDC and is the second-largest contributor of votes to the party’s success in national elections. Given their unwavering support over the years, they firmly believe that the constituency deserves direct ministerial representation in government.
Several frustrated party members and community residents expressed their disappointment, stating that their contributions to the party have consistently gone unrecognized. They emphasized the need for Ashaiman to have a stronger voice in national decision-making, as they believe their constituency has been overlooked for too long.
Amid the unrest, Godwin Tsimesi, the Presiding Member of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, stepped in to call for calm. He urged residents to remain patient while appealing to President Mahama to address their concerns. Tsimesi stressed that Ashaiman deserves fair political representation and recognition, adding that the growing discontent among residents should not be ignored.
As the dust settles, the situation in Ashaiman remains tense, with residents waiting anxiously for a response from the government. Whether their demands will be met or their frustrations will continue to simmer remains to be seen.
