A leading communicator from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kojo Yeboah, has publicly criticized President John Dramani Mahama's decision to appoint Dr. Randy Abbey as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCOBOD (Ghana Cocoa Board).
Yeboah questioned Abbey's suitability for the role, raising concerns about his lack of a farming background and perceived disconnect from the party's grassroots.
Yeboah mocked the appointment, stating that Abbey "can barely distinguish between a cassava stick and a cocoa tree," implying a lack of practical knowledge crucial for leading COCOBOD. While acknowledging the competence of Mahama's ministerial appointees, Yeboah found the CEO appointments, particularly Abbey's, unsettling.
He further questioned Abbey's political alignment, noting the absence of prominent NDC figures in Abbey's entourage upon assuming the position.
Yeboah went on to accuse President Mahama of overlooking loyal NDC members who contributed to his electoral victory in favor of outsiders. He specifically questioned the lack of appointments from the Zongo caucus, a key demographic for the NDC.
This has fueled speculations that Mahama's administration may be shifting its appointment strategy in ways that could alienate core supporters.
Dr. Randy Abbey, also Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, was appointed CEO of COCOBOD on January 21, 2025, as part of the Mahama administration's efforts to revitalize the country's economy. His background in media and sports administration has raised questions about whether he possesses the expertise required to lead Ghana’s cocoa industry, a crucial sector for the country's economy.
Kojo Yeboah's criticism highlights potential divisions within the NDC regarding President Mahama's appointment strategy. The concerns raised about expertise, political loyalty, and inclusivity could spark further debate and scrutiny of the administration's decisions.
The appointment underscores a crucial question of whether loyalty trumps competence in filling key government positions. It remains to be seen how this criticism will impact the COCOBOD leadership and the broader political landscape.
What do you think about Dr. Randy Abbey's appointment? Should political loyalty outweigh industry expertise, or should the best-qualified individuals always get the job?
