Deep within the campus of KNUST, where history and culture converge, stands the iconic Big Six Monument, a testament to Ghana's struggle for independence. The mastermind behind this monumental structure is Jesse James Azzu, a sculptor whose journey from Odumase Krobo to the world of academics is as fascinating as the artwork he creates.

Azzu's path to becoming a sculptor was far from conventional. Born into a family where law and architecture were the preferred career choices, his passion for drawing and sculpture was initially met with resistance. However, Azzu's determination and belief in his artistic vision ultimately led him to pursue a career in sculpture.

Azzu's family legacy played a significant role in shaping his artistic journey. As a relative of the renowned artist Vincent Akwete Kofi, whose works once adorned the Ghanaian currency, Azzu drew inspiration from his family's rich artistic heritage.

The creation of the Big Six Monument was a spontaneous idea born out of Azzu's desire to create something that would reflect Ghana's independence. The monument, which depicts the six leaders who fought for Ghana's independence, has become an iconic symbol of Independence Hall and a tribute to the country's rich history.

Azzu's commitment to leaving a lasting legacy extends beyond the Big Six Monument. His work can be seen in various institutions, including Queen Elizabeth II Hall, where he created a series of sculptures that reflect the themes of royalty, achievement, and development.

Azzu's focus on promoting the African narrative through his art is evident in his approach to sculpture. He believes that African art is rapidly evolving, with new ideas and styles emerging daily.

In addition to his work at KNUST, Azzu has been involved in various other projects, including the construction of the Gyamadudu Museum in the Ashanti Region and the creation of the 60-foot diameter ECG main logo cast in Kumasi.

Azzu's story serves as a testament to the power of passion, determination, and creativity. His contributions to Ghana's artistic landscape have left an indelible mark, inspiring future generations of artists and sculptors.
