2025 Independence Celebration to be Organised in Jubilee House to Cut Costs
The government of President John Dramani Mahama has chosen to be minimalist in this year’s Independence celebration. As a way of cutting costs, the national parade is to be hosted in Jubilee House in place of a rotational system that saw it hosted in various regional centers in previous celebrations.
Responding to questions posed to him by journalists, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said that it is a response to high costs that came with having it in various places. Drawing his example from that in Ho in 2023, said to have been costly to the nation to the tune of GH¢15 million, to point to the financial burden brought forth by a rotational system.
According to him, though having celebrations decentralized was a great move, financial situations of the nation require a reconsideration of priorities. “The review has shown that having to take the event to one regional capital to the next one has a high price tag to it. With our budget constraints, it is not budget-friendly to continue in that way,” he said.
The minister added that even when the celebration was hosted largely in Accra, expenses were relatively in check. However, every move came with added logistics that are unsustainable in today’s budget situations.
As a way of cutting expenses, even the usual Independence Square celebration is to be cut short. President Mahama is eager to mark the day of his country’s independence but feels that it is possible to do it in a symbolic yet budget-friendly way.
“In view of economic challenges and other urgent national needs, the President has deemed that a modest yet dignified celebration at Jubilee House is the way to do it,” he added.
This decision is in keeping with action taken by government to reduce unnecessary expenditure without compromising national events of great significance.
