American Teacher Marc Fogel Returns Home After Four Years in Russian Prison

Marc Fogel, an American teacher, has finally returned to the United States after spending four years in a Russian prison. Upon landing on U.S. soil late Tuesday night, he wasted no time in heading to meet former President Donald Trump at the White House.

A Long-Awaited Homecoming

Fogel, who had been living and working in Russia, was arrested in 2021 at a Moscow airport for possessing medical marijuana. Initially sentenced to 14 years in prison, he served only four years before a diplomatic negotiation led to his release. The effort, spearheaded by Donald Trump, businessman Steve Witkoff, and key advisors, facilitated a prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Russia.

"President Trump, Steve Witkoff, and the President’s advisors negotiated an exchange that serves as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine," an official statement confirmed.

An Emotional Reunion with Trump

Upon arrival, an emotional Fogel met with Donald Trump and expressed his gratitude. Struggling to put his feelings into words, he shared how deeply he admired the former President.

"How proud I am of what you’ve done, being back in my country… I love it," Fogel stated during his meeting.

Trump also took a moment to ask about Fogel’s 95-year-old mother, recalling a promise he had made to her during his presidential campaign to bring her son home. He noted that she was in a “bit of shock” after learning about his release.

Life in a Russian Prison

Speaking to reporters, Fogel reflected on the immense hardships he faced while incarcerated. He revealed that each day in prison was a struggle, describing how he endured over 100 days in a hospital and received more than 400 injections during his time there.

"Every second, every minute, every day was a challenge," he shared, adding that he would need time to process everything he had experienced.

Despite his suffering, he remained humble and declined to be labeled as a hero. Instead, he directed praise toward Trump, calling him "a hero" for securing his release. He also acknowledged the diplomatic service officials, commending them for their efforts in bringing him home.

Trump’s Take on the Release

Following Fogel’s return, Trump described it as a “big catalyst” in fostering goodwill between the U.S. and Russia.

"I think there’s goodwill in terms of the war," he commented, referring to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Fogel family, meanwhile, expressed their deep gratitude to Trump, noting that their four-year separation had been the most painful period of their lives. Speaking with CNN, they described his return as the beginning of their healing process and thanked Trump for his "unwavering leadership."

With his newfound freedom, Marc Fogel now looks forward to rebuilding his life, reuniting with his loved ones, and coming to terms with the ordeal he has endured.
