The Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) has urged Ghanaians to prioritize their health and well-being as the nation joins the global community in observing St. Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 14, 2025.
As part of its ongoing awareness campaign on HIV/AIDS, GHANET has cautioned the public, especially young people, to refrain from engaging in risky sexual behaviors that could expose them to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
In a statement released to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday, GHANET emphasized the importance of making informed choices regarding sexual health. The statement, signed by its President, Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, highlighted the need for responsible behavior, safe practices, and regular health check-ups to curb the spread of HIV.
According to GHANET, while Valentine’s Day is widely recognized as a celebration of love and affection, it should also serve as a reminder for individuals to practice safe sex, maintain open conversations about sexual health, and seek medical guidance when necessary.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness through community engagement, educational programs, and media campaigns. It called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, healthcare providers, and civil society groups, to intensify their efforts in promoting HIV prevention and treatment services.
GHANET also encouraged couples and individuals to prioritize testing and counseling as essential steps in managing their sexual health. The organization stressed that early detection and treatment could significantly reduce the risks associated with HIV/AIDS, allowing individuals to lead healthier lives.
Furthermore, the statement highlighted the role of abstinence, faithfulness, and the consistent use of protection as key strategies in preventing new infections. GHANET urged parents and educators to play an active role in guiding young people toward making responsible life choices.
As part of the St. Valentine’s Day observance, GHANET plans to collaborate with health institutions and advocacy groups to distribute free condoms, provide voluntary HIV testing, and conduct public education sessions.
GHANET concluded by encouraging all Ghanaians to spread love responsibly, emphasizing that true love involves protecting oneself and others from harm.
