Manuel Akanji to Undergo Surgery, Sidelined for Up to 10 Weeks

Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji is set to undergo surgery on a thigh injury and is expected to be out of action for up to 10 weeks. The 29-year-old Switzerland international sustained the injury during City’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League knockout phase play-off at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola confirmed the severity of the injury, stating that Akanji would have surgery on Saturday and would likely be out for at least two months. His absence adds to Manchester City's ongoing injury struggles, as the team has already lost key players throughout the season, including defensive midfielder Rodri, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in September. Meanwhile, winger Jack Grealish also picked up a groin issue during the same match against Real Madrid, but Guardiola mentioned that his injury is not as severe. However, Grealish is unlikely to be fit for City’s upcoming Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

Akanji has been a crucial part of City's defensive lineup, having started 20 of the club’s 24 Premier League games this season and making 30 appearances across all competitions. His injury comes at a critical time for the defending champions, who are currently fifth in the Premier League and trailing 16 points behind leaders Liverpool. City has already faced defensive challenges this season, with key players such as John Stones, Nathan Ake, and Ruben Dias recently recovering from injuries. Guardiola praised Akanji’s efforts, highlighting his versatility and commitment to the team, particularly in difficult conditions. The manager acknowledged that the intense demands of the season had taken a toll on his players, saying, "The body said enough is enough."

With the Premier League title race heating up and City's Champions League aspirations at stake, Akanji's injury presents a significant setback. Guardiola will now have to find a way to manage the squad without one of his most reliable defenders. As City deals with mounting injury concerns, their depth will be tested in the coming weeks. The club will be hoping for a swift recovery for Akanji, as they aim to close the gap at the top of the table and compete for silverware in both domestic and European competitions.
