BUILDING COLLAPSE CLAIMS 10 IN EGYPT

A building collapse in Cairo on Monday resulted in 10 deaths and left eight others injured, with several more feared trapped under the debris, according to state media reports.


Ambulances were rushed to the scene in the working-class district of Kerdasa, where civil defence teams searched for potential survivors trapped beneath the rubble, as reported by the Al-Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper.


Eyewitnesses told the state outlet that a "gas cylinder explosion" triggered the collapse, and a police investigation is currently underway.


Cairo, a sprawling city of over 26 million people, inconsistently enforces building regulations. In recent years, the city has witnessed several deadly building collapses, often attributed to the deteriorating condition of some structures or failures to comply with safety regulations.


Meanwhile: Chimamanda Adichie, the renowned Nigerian author, shared that she welcomed twin boys in 2024, expanding her family, which already includes her nine-year-old daughter.


In an interview with The Guardian, Adichie opened up about the intense public interest in her personal life, her experiences with loss, and the challenges of balancing motherhood with her writing career.


“I want to protect my children,” she explained. “I’m fine with them being mentioned, but I don’t want the focus to shift entirely to them.”


Adichie, 47, has always been protective of her private life, keeping her 2009 marriage to physician Ivara Esege out of the public eye.


“Nigerians… they’re deeply curious about your personal life,” she noted. “That’s why I tend to resist sharing. I rarely talk about it.”


After a decade-long hiatus from fiction, Adichie is preparing to release Dream Count, a novel that delves into themes of immigration, motherhood, and marriage. She confessed that motherhood had caused a period of creative block.


“There were years when I was almost terrified that I wouldn’t write again. It was unbearable,” she said.


The breakthrough came while writing Notes on Grief, following the death of her father in 2020.
