Yaw Obimpeh Triumphs in Ashanti Regional Council of State Election

Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emerged victorious in the highly contested Ashanti Regional Council of State elections. He secured a commanding 49 votes out of the 85 votes cast, proving his strong support in the region. His nearest contender, Nkansah Boadu Nana Ayeboafo, garnered 35 votes, while Daniel Anarfi Yamoah received only 1 vote. Notably, one member of the electoral college did not attend the election, reducing the expected number of votes from 86 to 85. All votes cast were valid, with no ballots rejected.

Obimpeh's victory in this election reflects the trust and confidence that the Ashanti electorate has placed in him. His candidacy had a strong following, especially considering the chaotic events of the previous election, which had to be suspended. The initial vote was marred by violence, which led to the Electoral Commission (EC) postponing the election. The disturbance occurred during the sorting and counting of ballots, when unknown assailants invaded the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, destroying ballot boxes and scattering materials.

The chaos was reportedly sparked by the unexpected defeat of Obimpeh, a candidate seen as a strong favorite to win. His supporters were upset by the results, leading to the violent disruptions. In response to these incidents, security measures were tightened for the rescheduled elections. The Prempeh Assembly Hall, where the re-run was held, had tight security to ensure no further disturbances. Law enforcement deployed a water cannon and set up barriers to maintain order and prevent violent clashes, which had previously overshadowed the process.

Despite the setbacks, the re-run was carried out smoothly, with a peaceful atmosphere ensuring the results were legitimate. Yaw Owusu Obimpeh’s victory marks a significant moment in the Ashanti region’s political landscape, highlighting his resilience and widespread appeal, especially after overcoming the challenges of the initial election.

The success of this election signals a new chapter in the region’s political journey, with Obimpeh now positioned to represent the Ashanti region in the Council of State, an important body in Ghana's governance. His leadership and the strong mandate he received from the voters are expected to contribute significantly to the region’s development and political stability.
