Court Grants Bail to Police Inspector in Nana Pooley’s Murder Case
A Sunyani District Court has granted bail to Agyemang Duah Owusu, a 42-year-old police inspector accused of involvement in the murder of Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, a passionate supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC. The court set the bail amount at GH₵300,000 with two sureties and required Owusu to surrender his passport within three days. While he remains under investigation, he must report regularly to the police. The court also reconsidered the bail conditions of four other suspects—Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, a former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, along with Joseph Kyeremeh, Elizabeth Akosua Ntiwaa, and Yaa Asantewaa. Initially restricted, these individuals can now travel outside Sunyani without judicial limitations, provided they report to the police weekly. They face charges of abetment to murder under Ghana’s Criminal Offenses Act 1960 (Act 29) and are expected to reappear in court on March 10, 2025.
However, not all suspects were granted bail. The court denied bail to three individuals—Isaac Fosu, Augustine Yeboah, and Yaw Koshy—who remain in custody as they face direct murder charges. Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 3, 2025. Additionally, the prosecution informed the court that another suspect, identified only as Braimer, remains at large. Law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing him as part of the ongoing investigation. The tragic killing of Nana Pooley occurred on February 2, 2025, during a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC at the Nsoatre Professor Amoah Koromansah II Stadium. Pooley was reportedly stabbed during a violent altercation, leading to his untimely death and sparking outrage among football fans and the public.
This case has generated significant attention due to the involvement of both security personnel and public figures. As investigations continue, many are closely following the proceedings to ensure justice is served. The recent court decision allowing some suspects greater freedom while keeping others in custody has sparked debate, with some expressing concerns about potential interference with the case. Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko FC officials, supporters, and the general public demand a thorough and fair judicial process. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to assist the police in their investigations. With hearings set for early March, Ghanaians await further developments in what has become a high-profile legal battle.
