Although weight-loss drugs have been associated with a reduced risk of certain health conditions, they have also been linked to some negative side effects. These widely used medications may aid in treating conditions as varied as addiction, blood clotting disorders, and dementia—but they also present potential risks that could make some patients hesitant, according to a groundbreaking new study.

The research examined data from over two million diabetes patients in the U.S., including approximately 216,000 individuals using these widely prescribed medications, to assess their potential risks and advantages across 175 different health outcomes.

Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound, and other similar drugs belong to a category of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These are primarily prescribed to manage obesity and type 2 diabetes by curbing appetite and promoting weight loss.

In addition to their primary effects, these medications have been linked to a reduced likelihood of drug and alcohol dependency, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, seizures, blood clotting complications, infections, respiratory conditions, chronic kidney disease, and neurocognitive disorders. These findings were reported in the journal Nature Medicine.

Furthermore, the study indicated that GLP-1 receptor agonists could play a role in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress—two key factors in the development of cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Some studies also suggest these drugs may offer liver protection, potentially decreasing the risk of fatty liver disease and cirrhosis.

Despite these benefits, the drugs are not without their downsides. Some users have reported gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Additionally, researchers have expressed concerns about an increased risk of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and thyroid tumors. Since the long-term effects remain uncertain, experts stress the need for further investigation to fully understand the consequences of prolonged use.

The study underscores the expanding interest in GLP-1 receptor agonists beyond their original purposes of weight management and diabetes control. While the potential advantages are notable, healthcare professionals recommend that patients carefully weigh the benefits and risks before starting treatment.
