Ghanaians Slam Afenyo Markins For Making This Comment About MMDCEs Appointees
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, has stirred controversy with his remarks regarding the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
He stressed the importance of appointing only capable individuals to these roles, rather than those who lack basic education.
Addressing concerns over the delay in appointing MMDCEs, Afenyo-Markin voiced disappointment with the Minister for Local Government, questioning why the nomination process had not been expedited despite the significant responsibilities MMDCEs hold in local governance.
"A Local Government Minister has been in office for three weeks now. Why is there still a delay in naming the MMDCEs? What is causing the holdup?
We must ensure competent individuals fill these positions—not people who haven’t even completed primary school. I doubt the public would be happy with such choices," he remarked.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions across the country, with many debating his stance. Some argue that academic qualifications should not be the sole criterion for leadership, while others interpret his statement as a veiled critique of members within his own party.
A social media user, @Sedzi, questioned, “Afenyo-Markin, do you need a degree to become Ghana’s President? The so-called educated elite gain power only to enrich themselves. Most corruption scandals involve highly educated politicians.”
Another user, @Peter, expressed disappointment, saying, “I once had great respect for this man, but now I see he is just like the others.”
Similarly, @Nsiah remarked, “He is indirectly taking a dig at someone in his own party.”
Meanwhile, @Asante criticized the emphasis on qualifications, stating, “With all the so-called educated leaders we’ve had in power, what have they really accomplished?”
Screenshots of online reactions have been widely circulated.
Afenyo-Markin’s remarks have ignited a national discussion on the criteria for appointing government officials.
While some support his emphasis on competence, others argue that leadership is not solely about formal education but also about vision, experience, and dedication to progress.
