Part 1: The Weight of Effort
Jace loved Ava—deeply, truly. From the moment they got together, he made sure she felt it. He sent her good morning texts before she even woke up, planned little surprises, and made time for her even when his schedule was packed. He wanted her to know she was cherished.
Ava loved Jace too. And she did try. She texted him back, sometimes sent updates about her day, and reassured him when he asked if everything was okay. But Jace couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.
It wasn’t that Ava didn’t care—it was just that she didn’t seem to show it the same way he did. And the more Jace gave, the more he noticed the gaps between her effort and his own.
Part 2: Silent Distance
Jace didn’t mind being the one who initiated things—at least, not at first. But as time passed, he started feeling like he was always the one reaching out first, always the one making sure they were okay.
Ava, on the other hand, didn’t see what was wrong. She still messaged him, still spent time with him. Just… not all the time. Sometimes she got caught up in her own world, and it wasn’t that she didn’t think of Jace—she just didn’t always say it.
Jace never wanted to seem needy, so he didn’t bring it up. But inside, doubt started to creep in. Was he asking for too much? Or was Ava simply not as invested as he was?
Part 3: Cracks in the Foundation
The days continued like this—Ava communicating sometimes, Jace making up for the rest. She didn’t see it as a problem, but Jace did. And since Ava never voiced any issues, Jace assumed she was fine.
But he wasn’t. He was tired.
He started holding back, waiting to see if Ava would notice. If she would be the one to check in first, to send the first “good morning” for once. And sometimes she did, but other times she didn’t. And when she didn’t, Jace wondered if she even realized how much effort he had been putting in.
Ava, on the other hand, started to feel something shift. Jace’s messages became shorter, his enthusiasm faded a little. But since he never said anything was wrong, she assumed he was just busy.
Neither of them talked about it. And that silence started breaking them apart.
Part 4: The Breaking Point
One night, after another long day of Jace waiting for a message that never came, he finally asked:
“Do you even want this anymore?”
Ava was caught off guard. “What? Of course I do.”
“Then why does it feel like I’m the only one trying?” His voice was steady, but his heart was anything but.
Ava frowned. “I do try, Jace. I talk to you, I spend time with you. What more do you want?”
“I just… I just want to feel like I’m not the only one keeping this relationship alive.”
Ava opened her mouth, then closed it. She didn’t know what to say. She hadn’t realized how much he had been carrying alone.
Part 5: The Aftermath
Ava lay awake that night, replaying Jace’s words in her mind. She wasn’t doing nothing—she knew that. But maybe she wasn’t doing enough. Maybe she had let herself believe that because she still texted him sometimes, still reassured him sometimes, it meant everything was okay.
But “sometimes” wasn’t enough for someone who gave his all.
The next morning, she texted first. Then she called. And for the first time in a long time, she told him everything she had been feeling—the things she had been too quiet about, the things that made her withdraw even when she didn’t mean to.
And for the first time in a long time, Jace felt like he wasn’t the only one fighting for them, but Ava was there as well.
They finally found ways to solve the problems they had, and they are now together fighting through everything challenging together.
