The 2025 MOBO Awards took centre stage in Newcastle on Tuesday night, spotlighting the brilliance of Black-origin music across the UK and beyond.

The star-studded event delivered electrifying performances from Krept & Konan, Bashy, Spice, and Nova Twins, with a lineup of award winners reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of modern Black music.
The night also honoured figures making an impact beyond the music scene, further solidifying the MOBOs’ commitment to cultural influence.
It was previously reported that Ayra Starr took home both the Best International Act and Best African Act awards.
Big Winners of the Night This year’s major honours were claimed by Central Cee, Darkoo, and Bashy. Central Cee walked away with Best Male Act, cementing his place as one of the most decorated artists in MOBO history with seven awards, now tied with Stormzy.
Darkoo made her mark by winning Best Female Act and Song of the Year for Favourite Girl, featuring Dess Dior.
Bashy, celebrating his return to the music scene, triumphed in two categories: his album Being Poor Is Expensive won Album of the Year, and he also took home the Best Hip-Hop Act award. The album, praised for its powerful exploration of race, mental health, and the struggles of the working class in North-West London, resonated deeply with listeners and critics alike.
Special Honours and Industry Recognition Beyond music, the MOBOs honoured those making significant contributions to culture. Olympic gold medalist Denise Lewis was presented with the prestigious “Paving the Way” award, recognising her immense influence across sports, media, and entertainment. She joins an esteemed list of past honorees, such as Idris Elba, Sir Lenny Henry, Nicola Adams, and the late Jamal Edwards.
Dancehall legend Vybz Kartel received the MOBO Impact Award for his immense influence on the genre and the broader music industry. MOBO founder Kanya King praised his “immeasurable” impact, highlighting how his legacy has shaped global music trends.
Notable Firsts and Historic Moments Odeal made waves by becoming a double winner, securing both Best Newcomer and Best R&B/Soul Act, marking a major milestone in his rapid rise.
Nigerian star Ayra Starr made history as the first African woman to win Best International Act and the first female to claim Best African Music Act in 16 years, further cementing Afrobeats' dominance on the global stage.
Ezra Collective, winners of the 2023 Mercury Prize, added to their collection with Best Jazz Act. Other notable winners included Scorcher (Best Grime Act), Pozer (Best Drill Act), TSHA (Best Electronic/Dance Act), and Annatoria (Best Gospel Act).
In media and entertainment, The 90s Baby Show won Best Media Personality, while actor-musician Jacob Anderson was honoured with Best Performance in a TV Show/Film for his portrayal of Louis in Interview With the Vampire. The Best Video award went to Mnelia’s My Man, directed by Femi Bello.
A Legacy of Excellence and Looking Ahead The MOBO Awards continue to be a key platform for celebrating Black music and culture, both within the UK and globally. As the organization looks toward its 30th anniversary in 2026, its influence remains as strong as ever.
Founder Kanya King, who recently shared her battle with stage-four cancer, reiterated her commitment to leading the MOBOs into a new era of innovation and cultural impact, as reported by The Guardian on Tuesday.
