Nigerian-born British actress Cynthia Erivo has been cast as Jesus in the upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl.
The exciting news was announced on Wednesday through the official Hollywood Bowl Instagram account, celebrating Erivo's impressive career, which includes an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award, as well as three Academy Award nominations.
The announcement read: "Just announced! #cynthiaerivo joins the Hollywood Bowl’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar this summer. The Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner, and three-time Oscar nominee, will take on the role of Jesus in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic musical."
This rock opera, running from August 1 to August 3, reimagines the final days of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas Iscariot. The musical delves into the personal conflicts and relationships between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, followers, and the Roman Empire, all conveyed through powerful songs.
The production will be directed and choreographed by Colombian-American Sergio Trujillo, with Stephen Oremus as musical director and conductor.
Originally released as a concept album, Jesus Christ Superstar made its Broadway debut in 1971 and went on to gross over $237 million worldwide by 1980. It ran for eight years in London from 1972 to 1980, holding the record for the longest-running West End musical until Cats surpassed it in 1989.
Erivo, renowned for her captivating performances both on stage and screen, has earned widespread recognition since launching her career in 2011, garnering global acclaim and numerous prestigious awards.
Meanwhile: Ayra Starr has made history as the first woman in 16 years to win the Best African Music Act award at the 2025 MOBO Awards. The Nigerian superstar also claimed the Best International Music Act honour during the ceremony in Newcastle.
