New national daily minimum wage announced

The National Tripartite Committee (NTC) has announced a 10% increase in the National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) for 2025, raising it to GH₵19.97.

This new rate will come into effect on 1st March 2025. The decision was made after considering the current economic challenges, the cost of living, and the sustainability of businesses.

The NTC, which includes representatives from the government, employers, and organised labour, underscored the importance of maintaining employment levels while addressing economic hardships.

A communiqué signed by Labour Minister Dr. Pelpuo, Ghana Employers Association President Nana Dr. Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee, and TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah highlighted that the 2025 NDMW would be exempt from tax.

Dr. Pelpuo, outlined the outcome of the negotiations, warned that institutions or organisations failing to comply with the new minimum wage would face sanctions under the law.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving living standards while balancing economic sustainability. The Labour Minister also expressed appreciation for the support and understanding shown by employers and organised labour during the negotiations.

He commended the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission for providing the technical expertise that contributed to the success of the negotiations.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson acknowledged the economic challenges faced by both workers and employers, stating, "We are in this together."

He assured employers that the government would expedite the economic recovery to ensure businesses survive, thrive, and create the necessary employment opportunities for Ghanaians.   This agreement represents a collaborative effort to address the challenges facing Ghana’s workforce and sets a path towards economic recovery.

President John Mahama has accused the previous government under Nana Akufo-Addo of mishandling the country’s affairs, claiming it managed the economy criminally

"We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene," he said.

“How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand,” he added.

The President said this during the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, where the government announced a 10% increase in, base pay for public sector workers, effective from January.
